A sample cover letter for a nurse job, what makes it work, and how to write your own from your real experience.

Dear Nurse Manager,
I'm applying for the Registered Nurse position on your medical-surgical unit at Lamna Healthcare. I've worked as an RN on a 30-bed med-surg unit at Tailspin Community Hospital for three years, caring for adult patients before and after surgery.
Your posting asks for strong patient assessment and patient education. On my unit I complete head-to-toe assessments each shift, update care plans with the charge nurse, and teach patients and families about new medications and wound care before discharge. I document in Epic and precept new graduate nurses during their orientation.
I'm drawn to Lamna because your unit works closely with case management on discharge planning, which is the part of nursing I want to grow in. I hold a current RN license in the state and BLS and ACLS certifications.
Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the chance to talk about how I can support your team.
Sincerely, Alex Sample, RN
